Lawyer Pilot's Bar Association
LPBA Summer 2009 Meeting

Mackinac Island , MI

Convention Program - Including Speakers and Presentation Titles

The Lawyer Pilots Bar Association returned to Mackinac Island this Summer, a favorite destination of many LPBA members. Members and their families enjoyed horse-drawn carriage rides, golf, and bike rides around the island. Those traveling from hot summer climates especially enjoyed the beautiful weather above the 45th parallel.

The keynote speaker at the meeting was Robert Sumwalt, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board. Member Sumwalt delivered the keynote address to the attendees Thursday evening, emphasizing the importance of pilot professionalism. After discussing several aviation accidents investigated by the Board in which pilot inattention or deviation from regulations played a role, Member Sumwalt challenged LPBA members to set the standard for professionalism, safety and excellence.

The following morning, Administrative Law Judge Willam "Roger" Mullins and Member Sumwalt participated in a panel discussion of enforcement and medical certification cases, describing the Board’s appeals process for airmen against whom FAA action has been taken. The panel was part of the LPBA’s excellent Continuing Legal Education program for aviation law practitioners.

In addition to the excellent CLE, members and their families were entertained Grand Hotel style. If you have never attended a meeting before, you will not regret attending an LPBA meeting. There are many events for the whole family to enjoy where you can get to know your fellow members and swap war stories about your flying exploits.
